Engaging the Public in our meetings Most scientific meetings come to a community, enjoy the local culture, have their meeting and then depart, with local residents hardly aware of what has happened. Since we are a regional division of a large multi-national and highly respected poly-scientific organization, we are, in principle, in a unique position to use our community role to increase the grass-roots regional and local impact of science. As a science-advocacy organization-- especially one that is regionally focused -- we are perhaps in a unique position to instead have real and lasting local impact. As described in section B below, the effort to do so has meant identifying science related issues of explicit local importance and then engaging individuals and local organizations with expertise and experience in those issues.
